1949 - 1961 in Hopkins Street, Parow:

Before you view the photos, please bear with me - I need to make some general comments:
a)  Why did I do this website?  Firstly, I enjoy doing websites;  secondly, I tend to be nostalgic & the years 1949 to 1961 in Hopkins Street, Parow, meant a lot to me;  thirdly, over the last couple of years I've been working on my "biography"!  No, I'm not egotistical enough to think that many people would be interested in MY biography!!  The "bio" would be for my children and grandchildren, my brother Terry and my (step) sister Marlene in Jhb.  And MAYBE one or two close friends hehe!!

b)  Someone looking at the website without knowing the background would probably think that I really love myself with all the pictures of myself on the site.  I assure you, ego has nothing to do with it:  I tried to show you as many photos of myself, my parents, my younger brother Terry (Terence) and some of my friends whom, I seem to recall, you also knew.  By doing this I was hoping to jog your memory back to those years even though they are 50+ years ago!!

c)  You & your family lived in a house that had belonged to the Levy family and we'd always referred to it as "Oupa Levy's house".  My late Mom, who didn't easily take to people, was very fond of you.  You often came over and played with my brother Terry who would have been 7 years old in 1959.

I never had a "crush" on you but I liked you & always wished you were a few years older as I would have wanted to take you out,  I was not too sure that that would have happened, for 2 reasons (i) your folks would probably not have wanted you to go out with a "Gentile" guy & (ii) I wasn't too sure that you would have gone out with me as I always felt that, once you met my 2 friends, brothers Norman & Mellvyn Calitz (who stayed in Smith Street) you rather "fancied" them!

And no one would have blamed you - both of them were good looking, well-built guys whereas I on the other hand was rather "nerdy" hehe!!

I recall specifically one Saturday evening (I have it in a diary somewhere) you spent several hours at my place:  my parents had gone away for the weekend and Mellvyn & Norman were over at my place and were going to spend the night.  You had been there before supper & after supper you came back and stayed until your Mom came to call you - around 21h30!!!  When she discovered that you'd been alone in our house with three 17-year-old guys she forbade you to visit our house for a while!!!

Your Mom & my Mom often used to chat, usually at our front gate when your Mom used to come and call you!!

(d)  The photos on the website:  some of them were taken around 1959, which is the year I remember most clearly with regard to you, but I've included photos taken before & after then as well - all in an effort to try to help you to recognise us and to "jog your memory"!!  Please also bear in mind that most of these photos were taken with very simple cameras and the quality of the photos are generally not that great!!!  Happy browsing!!!
