1949-1961 Hopkins Street - just Bernard:

This photo was taken in first half of January 1959.  My Mom, Dad, Terry & I were on holiday in a place called "Hartenbos", a sort of "suburb" of Mossel Bay.  I'm standing outside our bungalow.  The car, with an Oudtshoorn registration, belonged to my Mom's aunt, who came to visit us from Oudtshoorn for the day, on her way to Cape Town.

Hartenbos was then owned by an Afrikaans Christian otganisation and it consisted of different sized "bungalows".  It was an extremely popular place, especially for Afrikaans families from the other provinces.  While still popular as a holiday destination, today it is quite "established" and the holiday "bungalows" are in the minority.  In those days, however, private ownership of property in the area was not allowed.  While I did not share their opinion, my buddies Norman & Mellvyn always felt that in this photo I looked like "a real cool cat!" - language of those years!!

Two photos of me in our yard back in Hopkins Street:  first one taken early 1959 & the next one around mid-1959 (I still had my "crew-cut" hairstyle!)

Taken late 1959 (my hairstyle was back to "normal"!).  The Gazebo wall is behind me.
