VARIATIONS IN THE IRON GAME

There are 4 broad categories of "disciplines" making use of weights. They are:
    1) Olympic Lifting (Afrikaans = Gewigoptel);
    2) Power Lifting (Afrikaans = Kragoptel);
    3) Bodybuilding (Afrikaans = Ligaamsbou);
    4) Weight training for other sports;

Olympic Lifting:  this consisted of 3 particular "lifts" (later reduced to 2 lifts) done in particular ways and it has it’s own system of training for these lifts, the aim being to lift weights as heavy as possible in the ways/styles particular to this discipline which, surpringly to most people,required fast reflexes.  This discipline has been around for many years;

Power Lifting:  this consists of 3 particular "lifts" (different to "Olympic Lifts") and it also has it’s own system of training, again, the aim being to lift weights as heavy as possible in the ways/styles particular to this discipline.  In it's official modern form, this discipline has only been around since the early 1960s;

Bodybuilding:  this can consist of hundreds of different exercises and lifts with weights and "machines" and the aim is of course to develop massive musculature all over the body.

Weight training for other sports:  this generally consists of more exercises and lifts than Olympic and Power lifting but not as many as in Bodybuilding and geberally the wieghts used are not quite as heavy as in the previous 3 disciplies.

When one was involved in any of the 4 aspects of weights, but mainly the first 3, you were said to be part of the "Iron Game" and the weights were often referred to as "the iron pills" (Afrikaans = "yster pille"!!)
